Opposition to Push for Government’s Resignation in Parliament

Author: Joseph Alexander Smith

Georgia’s largest opposition party, the United National Movement (UNM) has announced plans to initiate a vote of no confidence to unseat the Georgian Dream Coalition-led government after a weekend of protests and rallies.

At an anti-government rally held in Freedom Square on Saturday March 21, at which speakers slammed the government for alleged economic mismanagement, UNM MP Giorgi Gabashvili announced the start of a political “struggle”, which he said would inevitably lead to the resignation of the government.

“In the coming days, protest rallies will be held throughout Georgia. There will be protest rallies in Tbilisi and protest rallies in all the regions” Gabashvili said, suggesting also that the UNM will organize “permanent rallies if necessary” and even picket government buildings.

Gabashvili also announced that UNM Members of Parliament will work on initiating a procedure to call a vote of no confidence in parliament, with the aim of forcing the government to resign and call for early parliamentary elections.

Author: Meri Taliashvili

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the US embassy in Georgia invited Rania Anderson, as a leading authority on business women in emerging economies, to Georgia. Rania is one of those rare people to have devoted her life to social work and to helping women around the globe.

During her visit, Rania travelled to different parts of the country, gave lectures at five universities, and met business groups and displaced people. One the lectures she gave took place at Ilia State University and discussed: “Building a Network in the 21th Century.” It gave attending Georgian students priceless advice for a successful and meaningful life. The event was attended by the US ambassador to Georgia, Richard Norland, the Rector of Ilia State University, Dr. Giga Zedania, and students from different universities.

In 2010, Rania founded The Way Women Work - the online “How-to-Succeed” Guide for women in growing economies. She considers herself extremely fortunate to be doing her life’s work by equipping women around the world for success.

Georgia Today met Rania Habiby Anderson to ask her about herself and her visit to Georgia.
